What makes a popular post? The main determinant seems to be an incoming link from a high-traffic site; items 1-4, 6, and 13-15 above were all linked from sites like Instapundit, the Dynamist Blog, Greg Mankiw, and Marginal Revolution. Items 5, 9, 12, and 17 come up often in search -engine results. My guess that items 7, 8, 10, 16, 18, and 20 were the most popular among our regular readers.

Peter, thank you for citing “The SWOT Model.” I went to it eagerly because I hadn’t seen it before and also because it’s a framework we use all the time in our professional work advising mid-sized firms.
FWIW, it appears to have been a 2006 post. That was before I knew you guys existed, so I hadn’t seen it. Was delighted to find the Makadok paper, which I also hadn’t seen; I admire Rich’s work a lot.
Since today is a lazy day of sorts around here, I clicked through all 20 of the “top posts.” Found out that five–#7, 9, 10, 18, 20–appear to have come from 2006. Hmmmm. And did you know that four of the top six came from guest blogger Postrel? How do we get him back?! :-)
Thanks for all the fine work this blog does, and Happy New Year to all. Let’s hope that 2008 is happy, healthful, and prosperous.

Warren, thanks for the kind words. On the dates, I should have specified that these are the “posts that were the most popular in 2007,” not the “posts from 2007 that were the most popular.”
As for Postrel: Why do you think we got rid of him? :-)
