A venerable graduate (probably about the age of Steve Horwitz) once prefaced a talk to Ag Science students with a timeline indicating how much you know as you go though your career. The high point (when you know the most) is when you take your first degree. The low point, called the Phd Point, is midway through writing your dissertation. If you manage to survive that process the line follows a gradual upward gradient for the rest of your career.
