Overheard at Starbucks This Morning

7 April 2008

| Peter Klein |

“She always referred to herself as ‘Dr. S____,’ so I assumed she was a medical doctor. Then I found out she was a former School Superintendent, with a Doctorate in Education.”

“Yeah, the only people who call themselves ‘Dr.’ are medical doctors and people with Doctorates in Education.”

I believe the person is misinformed. Do you concur, Dr. Klein?

Personally I prefer the appelation “Herr Doktor Professor.” I also like students to bow when I enter the room. But sometimes all I get is “Dude.”

Yes, but that is just students’ abbreviation that you are one bad as* dude!

I am not really big on titles or bowing. However, I do wear a cape to class. I also have someone follow me with a fog machine, so that the fog billows into the door as I enter.

Peter, I hope you know that you can’t actually call yourself Herr Doktor Professor when you’re in Germany. Though perhaps they would make an exception for someone called Klein.

    P. S. By the way, I understand it’s actually Herr Professor Doktor, since Professor is more important than Doktor.

Chiropractors are religious about calling themselves doctor.
