New Online Journal — COPE

As we all know, acronyms are of the essence, and COPE — Critique of Political Economy — has cleverly chosen one that is very close to HOPE, History of Political Economy, and ROPE, Review of Political Economy. So, all you prospective authors, let it be known that “when there is no HOPE there is the ROPE unless you can COPE.”

COPE describes itself as “inter-disciplinary” and “devoted to the critique of political economy.” In other words, it is commie (you think I am too harsh? Here is what they say themselves: “The pioneering work in the critique of political economy is that of Karl Marx. We intend to carry on in that tradition“). Moreover,

The critique of political economy, as we use the term, is the interrogation of the presuppositions of economics and the practices of economics, presuppositions and practices that lead to particular ways of discriminating between knowledge and error, sound and unsound methodology, fact and fiction.

Thus, COPE is not only commie, but also pomo. Still,

It is a journal of pluralistic debate. The ideas of no current or thinker will be excluded a priori. We welcome contributions from, and the participation of, post-Keynesian, Evolutionary, Schumpeterian, Institutionalist and other heterodox economists.

Note, however, that Austrians aren’t mentioned (except indirectly). Too bad! No, really …

You can also get a sense of the journal’s orientation from the personal home page of co-editor Andrew Kliman:

Kliman’s work is — shall we say — “interesting.”

Anyone want to join me in founding these new journals?

Strategic Challenges of Political Economy (SCOPE) — integrating strategic management and Marxism

Perspectives on Political Economy (POPE) — a journal of Catholic social thought, with an emphasis on Liberation Theology

Graduate Research on Political Economy (GROPE) — a journal for leftish graduate students searching for dissertation topics

Directions in Political Economy (DOPE) — fulfilling the need for yet another Marxist journal

See amusing discussion of COPE on the ‘Capital and Class’ mailing list. One of the ‘pluralist’ editors advocated that another leftist be “Eaton alive!”. When publicly challenged for ‘allegedly’ advocating *cannibalism* (!) Dr. Andrew Kliman — Professor of Economics at Pace University — wrote in his defense “I did not suggest a preferred species (wolf, or tiger, or human, etc.) to do the Eaton!” ! There’s this guy on the C&C list who also ripped him for identifying with The Devil on his homepage. Check it out. Lots of chuckles.
