In 2004, my colleagues at the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration, professors Sven Haugland and Svein Ulset, and I organized a “Nordic Workshop on Transaction Cost Economics in Business Administration.” Oliver Williamson and my co-blogger gave keynote speeches. The best papers, including a paper by Williamson, were published in a special issue of the Scandinavian Journal of Management in 2005.
With Professor Arne Nygaard, Sven Haugland and I now plan a new workshop, no longer “Nordic,” on the application of TCE in business administration.
So far, Joe Mahoney, George John and Peter Klein are confirmed speakers. I will later post the full call for papers, but want to alert O&M readers to the workshop as early as possible. Here is the call in a preliminary version
Call for Papers
The dynamics of contracts and governance structures: New developments in transaction cost economics
Workshop, November 15 – 16, 2007
Bergen, NorwaySince taking off in the mid-1970s, transaction cost economics has been a theoretical and empirical success story. TCE has continuously expanded its scope, including in recent years an emphasis on the dynamics of contractual relations and governance structures. Thus, scholars have extended TCE with notions of path dependence and learning, and recent empirical studies have provided new insight into how contracts and governance structures change and evolve over time.
The purpose of this workshop is to take stock on recent development, present new contributions that extend TCE in the direction of dynamics, and to stimulate further progress in theoretical and empirical research.
Confirmed speakers include: Peter G. Klein (University of Missouri), Joseph Mahoney (University of Illionis, Urbana-Champaign), George John (University of Minnesota). The workshop is organized by Nicolai J. Foss (Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration and Copenhagen Business School), Sven A Haugland (Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration), and Arne Nygaard (Norwegian School of Management).
